Hi friends,

I want to start by thanking each of you for the incredible support you have provided. Each of you got behind us and this dream from the start without hesitation. You gave us great hope and encouragement. We are forever grateful.

As you know in May we had a battery pack catch on fire which exposed some major flaws in our internal safety controls. We quickly recalled all of our electric bikes and made the determination that there were no qualified battery pack assemblers in Indonesia and set out to source complete motor and battery kits from an established and highly qualified outside source. We brought in additional engineering support and established a relationship with Bafang. In the meantime we sought to generate some revenues to cover costs by building and selling/renting bamboo pedal bikes.

While all of this was taking place personal circumstances required that I move to Denver for at least a year to support one of my children. I hired a very bright and passionate GM to help run EWABI in my absence. She has done a great job however the challenges of launching a new brand in the biking industry are formidable. The importing of these batteries has proven to be very difficult and expensive. While everyone loves the pedal bikes very few people are actually interested in buying them at a price that we could support. The ability to maintain very tight and precise standards has also been a great challenge. For these and many other reasons I have decided to stop funding EWABI and am seeking to either hand it off to someone with the skills and funding to make it a success or close it down. It is with great sadness and disappointment that I share this decision with you.

Each of you have a few options. First, we will have a limited number of electric bamboo bikes available with the Bafang motors/batteries which we will offer to you at a price of Rp 20,000,000 (less your security deposit and unused rental payments) on a first come first serve basis. Second, we have a limited edition run of bamboo pedal bikes that are available for between Rp 8,000,000 -12,000,000 (you may apply your unused rental payments and security deposit here as well). Third, you may request to receive a refund of your unused funds.

Putu Hermawan will continue to build bikes in his own workshop and will be very happy to support you with on going maintenance and service at very reasonable fees. Cassy will stay on for a period of time to coordinate these final sales, refunds and any other matters that arise.

I am forever committed to contributing to a more just and sustainable planet. The idea of an Earth Corporation remains powerful and viable. I hope it is adopted by others. Each of you have deepened my belief in the power of individuals and small groups of people to make big changes. I will not be deterred by this setback. I look forward to continuing to build the relationships we have started. Let’s keep shooting for the stars!

Peace & Love,

Mark
